Wake Up and Smell the... Mushrooms?

Updated: Sep 16, 2022

What is better than a warm cup of coffee early in the morning? Not much. But, as someone with high anxiety and sensitive to caffeine, I had to come up with an other option.

How did my obsession start?

In the very early stages of my abusive relationship I began experiencing heart palpitations caused from stress and anxiety. I was also purchasing my first house at the time, and working full time. My doctor (unaware of my living situation) recommended I give up caffeine. My first thought was... "but I LOVE coffee, how is this going to work?"

So I began researching alternatives to coffee and came across a popular alternative made of mushrooms. I was skeptical at first of course, but continued to read about the vast health benefits that mushrooms have to offer. It blew my mind! Eventually, after researching multiple companies and reading a hundred articles on mushrooms, I ordered my first mushroom coffee from a company called Ryze. There are many different companies out there but I chose this one for the simplicity and ease of use of the website, certified organic products, price, and amazing customer service. Like seriously, their customer service is one of the best I've ever experienced. My rep, Alex (shoutout!), is always super responsive if I need my automatic shipment moved.

Reasons I love this Mushroom Coffee

One tbsp of mushroom coffee contains less than ½ the caffeine of a regular cup of coffee. I mix one Tbsp with about 1-2 cups of water or hot milk. Therefore, one drink has about 40-80 mg of caffeine compared to the about 120-200 mg in coffee (depending on how much you drink). I get just enough energy boost without the jitters or creeping in anxiety. Plus the Reishi mushrooms in this mix fight anxiety too!

"Reishi also appears to work on the HPA by improving the function of the adrenal glands themselves". (1)

This coffee helped change my every day life. I swear. After drinking it consistently (consistency is key!), I noticed a definite decrease in my heart palpitations, and a more relaxed focus at work. Not the jittery kind.

What does this mushroom coffee look like? It is in powder form, so it acts like an instant coffee. You can mix it in hot water (or ½ water and ½ skim milk- my favorite) and cold water with ice! I love to switch it up in the summer. Iced coffee is so much better on a hot day.

Also, It only takes only two minutes to make which is a major benefit since I am usually running late for work. I love mixing it with a little caramel creamer for some sweetness to cut the earthy flavor. If you want more coffee flavor, I also enjoy adding in some black decaf.

Now for the best part- it is formulated using eight different kinds of mushrooms which all have their own unique effects and ways of reducing anxiety and stress. These adaptogenic mushrooms are Cordyceps, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane, Shiitake, and King Trumpet. Read more about each one here. Blended together in this powder, they help sharpen focus, increase energy (without the jitters), combat anxiety, and actually even support immunity.
